Mylapore is a busy place, but our little corner for AC Tanjore Arts stays relatively calm. We are right in the heart of the area, surrounded by old buildings and the smell of jasmine from the nearby markets. Doing Tanjore art is a slow business. It involves a lot of sitting still and working with very small pieces of gold leaf and stones. The workshop isn't very big, and it’s usually filled with the smell of wood and glue. We have different sizes of boards leaning against the walls, some finished and some just started. The gold work can be messy and sometimes the tiny bits of foil stick to everything, including our clothes. It’s a traditional kind of thing to do, so we don't use much modern equipment. Just brushes, boards, and a lot of patience. Sometimes the humidity in Chennai makes the paste dry slower than we want. We just wait it out. It’s a simple life here in Mylapore, focusing on one board at a time. The light in the morning is the best for the fine lines, so we try to get the detailed stuff done early. There isn't much noise except for the fans humming and the occasional temple bell in the distance. We’ve been doing this for years and it just feels like home. It's just a place where we sit and paint every single day.
