Akhtar Ali has been running things out of 1484 Manimajra for years. I started helping him out because the place was getting too busy for one person to handle. The building is a bit older, so the walls have some marks and the windows rattle when a heavy truck goes past. It’s right in the middle of everything in Manimajra, so there’s always noise and people walking by. We have a small table where we keep the ledger and the phone. Most of the day is spent talking to people who come in looking for help with their paperwork. Akhtar sits in the corner chair, the one with the torn cushion, and he knows almost everyone who walks through the door. We don't really have a lunch break at a set time, we just eat when the work slows down a bit. Sometimes the electricity goes out in the afternoon, and we just sit there talking until it comes back on. It’s a simple setup but it works for us. We have a lot of files stacked up in the back room that need sorting, but we never seem to get around to it. The floor is made of that old grey stone that stays cool even when it’s boiling outside. It isn't a flashy company, just Akhtar and me and the daily tasks that keep us moving forward. We just try to keep up with everything that comes our way.
