Madras Metal Udyog is right at 4835, Bara Tooti Chowk, in the Sadar Bazar area. Despite the name, we’ve been firmly planted here in Delhi for a long time. Bara Tooti is a real landmark, and anyone who deals in metals in this city knows this crossing well. The shop itself is quite old and the walls could probably tell a lot of interesting stories if they had the chance. It’s a small space considering how much business actually goes through it, but we make use of every single inch of the walls and even the ceiling. We have copper, brass, and all sorts of metal items piled up high. The morning starts very early here because the market gets so packed by noon that you can hardly even walk. We spend our time weighing items, talking to regulars who have been buying from us for decades, and keeping an eye on the crazy street traffic outside. There’s no fancy computer system here; we still do most things the old-fashioned way with a pen and a ledger. The noise from the chowk is constant—horns, people shouting, and the sound of metal being loaded onto rickshaws. It’s a lot of energy, and it definitely keeps us on our toes. We don’t worry about fancy displays or lights. People come to us because they know where we are and they know we have the stuff they need. It’s a life built on being present every day and knowing the market.
