Dhiraj Metals is tucked away in Ajmeri Gate on Kundewalan Street, at number 751. If you know Delhi, you know how crowded it gets around here. Our shop has been around for years, and we have piles of metal everywhere you look. It is a small space, but we know exactly where everything is kept. My father started this, and now I am the one opening the shutters every morning. We deal with all kinds of metal pieces, mostly selling to people who come by with specific sizes in mind. It is a lot of lifting and moving heavy stuff around. The street is always full of rickshaws and people carrying bundles. Sometimes it feels like the whole city is trying to squeeze through Kundewalan Street at once. We don't have a website or anything like that. People just know us by word of mouth or they see the sign when they walk past. We take our lunch breaks together in the back of the shop. It is a simple life, really. We aren't trying to be the biggest metal sellers in India, just trying to make a living and keep the shop going. We see the same faces every week, mostly local workmen and other shopkeepers. It is dusty and noisy, but it is our place and we have been here through all kinds of changes in the city. Life moves fast here but we stay steady.
