I set up Muskan Salon at Shop No-28 on Nehru Nagar Road, right at the Neharu Nagar Square in Bhopal. This is a very busy intersection, so there is always dust and noise coming in from the street. I have to keep the door closed most of the time to keep the cool air in. The shop is small and simple. I have three chairs and a small bench for people to wait. The walls are painted a light color, though they could probably use a fresh coat soon. I’ve lived in Bhopal all my life, so I know how people like things done here. Most of my customers are men from the nearby colonies who want a quick cut before they go home from work. I do everything myself, from cutting hair to trimming beards and the occasional head massage. The head massages are popular because people are stressed from the traffic outside. I keep a water cooler in the corner because it gets so hot in the afternoons. The scissors I use have been with me since I started, and I sharpen them myself. It’s a modest way to make a living, but it keeps me busy. I don’t have a website or anything like that, just the shop and the people who walk through the door every day. Sometimes the power cuts out, but we just wait it out and keep talking.
