San Engineering & Locomotive Co Ltd has been sitting out here on White Field Road for a very long time. Back when we started, this part of Bangalore was mostly empty, just trees and quiet lanes. Now, the traffic is a constant roar and there are high-rises going up everywhere you look. Our place still looks much like it did years ago, with the big gates and the long driveway. It’s a large site because you need space for locomotives and heavy engineering. The buildings are built of old brick and stone, and they stay surprisingly cool even in the heat of the afternoon. You can smell the grease and the hot metal as soon as you walk through the gate. It’s a hard-working atmosphere. We have workers who have been with the company for decades, men who know the machines better than they know their own backyards. The tea breaks are strictly timed, and everyone gathers in the shade of the big trees that still line the edge of the property. We don’t have a shiny lobby with a receptionist. If you want someone, you usually have to go find them in one of the sheds. The paperwork is kept in heavy metal cabinets that have seen many coats of paint over the years. We just keep the wheels turning, literally, and don’t worry much about the changes happening outside our walls. It’s a steady kind of life that we have built here.
