If you come to 77, Netaji Subhas Road, you have to head up to the 4th floor and look for Room-401. That’s where you’ll find Mahanadi Bearings & Engineering Pvt. Ltd. It’s an old building in a part of Kolkata that’s always crowded and a bit dusty. Our office is pretty simple. We have shelves lining the walls filled with different types of bearings and metal components. There’s a distinct smell of grease and old paper that you notice as soon as you walk in. We spend our days taking orders over the phone and checking our stock. Sometimes we don’t have exactly what a customer needs, so we have to call around and track it down. It’s a lot of manual work, moving boxes and making sure the part numbers match up. We don’t have a fancy website or a big team of sales people. It’s just a few of us who understand how these machines work. The fans on the ceiling hum all day long, and we usually have the radio playing softly in the background. It gets hot in the afternoons, especially in the summer, but we keep the tea coming. We’ve known some of our clients for decades.
