Club O M G

Club O M G sits on Mahatma Gandhi Road at Kemps Corner 2. It’s a different kind of place than the shops around it. During the day, it’s mostly us cleaning up the floors and moving the furniture back into place. There’s a lot of glass to wipe down and the mirrors always seem to have finger marks on them. It’s dark inside even when the sun is out bright on MG Road. We spend a lot of time checking the speakers and making sure all the lights are working right. Sometimes a bulb pops and we have to climb a tall ladder to fix it. It’s not all glamour like people think. There is a lot of heavy lifting with crates of bottles and ice. When the doors open at night, it gets very loud and the air gets thick. We see all sorts of people, from young kids to folks who have been coming to this area for decades. The street outside is always jammed with cars and taxis. Sometimes things get a bit rowdy, and we have to step in and calm people down. It’s a long night, and we usually don't get home until the sun is coming up. My shoes are usually worn out every few months from all the walking on the hard floors. It’s a tiring job, but seeing the place full makes the effort feel alright.
