Mohammad Salons

Mohammad Salons is out in Kamarhati on M M Shakur Road. It’s a part of Kolkata 700058 that stays pretty busy. The shop is a simple place for men to get their hair cut. We have been here for a good while. The walls are painted a pale blue, but it’s fading now. We have some pictures of different hair styles on the wall, but mostly people just ask for the same thing they always get. It’s a very local kind of place. You won’t find anything modern or high-tech here. We just have our scissors, combs, and clippers. The chairs are heavy and metal. They make a loud sound when you adjust them. I usually have the radio playing some old songs. It helps pass the time when there are no customers. When it gets busy, men sit on the wooden bench along the wall. They talk about work or their families. It gets a bit loud sometimes with everyone talking at once. M M Shakur Road is a narrow street, so you can hear everything happening outside too. We try to keep the place clean, but hair gets everywhere. We just sweep it into the corner and keep going. It’s honest work and it pays the bills. That is all we really care about. Sometimes I think about painting the walls, but then I just get back to work.
