Khandelwal College of Architecture and Design

Out here in Aspur Khubchand, Bareilly, things are a bit more spread out. Our architecture college is situated where you can actually see a bit of the horizon, which I guess is good for students who are trying to design things. The building itself is full of drafting tables and those tall stools that are never quite comfortable enough. You’ll walk through the halls and see half-finished models made of foam board and glue everywhere. It’s messy, but that’s how it is when people are actually working. The faculty rooms are tucked away, usually filled with rolls of blueprints and old coffee mugs. Bareilly weather can be tough, either really dusty or very cold, so the building has its quirks depending on the season. We don't have a lot of fancy decorations on the walls; mostly it's just student work pinned up with masking tape. The people who work here, from the office staff to the ones keeping the lights on, have been around for a long time. It’s a practical place for learning how to build things. We don’t spend much time on fancy speeches. We just make sure there’s enough paper in the printers and that the studios stay open late enough for the students to finish their projects. It’s a quiet life in this part of town, just doing the work day by day. Sometimes the power goes out, and we just wait it out.
