Out here in Khushkhera, the air is usually full of the sound of stone being cut. Our place is at F-78 in the industrial area. It’s a big space because you need room to move these massive stones around. We’ve been working with Jas Stones for years now. It’s mostly about getting the right cut on a piece of granite or sandstone. The machines are old but they still do the job if you treat them right. We don’t have a fancy lobby or anything like that. You just walk into the shed and you’ll find us near the water tanks or the polishing area. It gets hot in Bhiwari, especially in the middle of the day, so we start early. We spend a lot of time checking the slabs for spots or uneven lines. It’s a lot of physical labor, moving things from the trucks to the racks. We keep the paperwork in a small desk near the entrance. Most of our visitors are truck drivers or supervisors from the big building projects. We drink a lot of tea and talk about the weather or the price of diesel. It’s not the kind of job where you wear a suit. My clothes are always stained with wet stone dust. We just focus on getting the slabs loaded up and sent out. It’s simple, hard work and it keeps us busy from morning until the sun goes down over the industrial plots.
