You can find us over at Gyan Singh’s place in Surajkund. He is the son of Narayan Singh Rawat, and his home in Pisangan is where Pushkarkisan Samriddhi Producer Company Limited gets things done. It is a very local setup, mostly just neighbors and families working together on the farming stuff. Pisangan is a place where everyone knows everyone’s business, especially when it comes to the harvest. We spend our mornings talking about the water levels and the seeds. It’s a producer company, which sounds official, but it’s really just a way for us to stick together so we don’t get pushed around by the bigger buyers. We have seen a lot of changes in the soil over the years. Some years the rain is good and everything is easy, but other times we are just scratching by. Gyan Singh keeps the books and makes sure everyone gets their fair share. It is a lot of dusty work and long hours under the sun. We don’t have a big fancy office with air conditioning. We just sit out in the shade and talk through what needs to be done for the next season. It’s honest work, and it keeps us busy from sunrise to sunset. Most of us have been doing this since we were kids, so it’s just part of who we are now and how we live our lives.
