Gayatri Pottery

Gayatri Pottery is based at Plot 207 in Phase - I of the Naroda G.I.D.C. estate. This part of the estate is quite old, so the roads are a bit narrow and the buildings have a lot of character. We work with clay all day long, so our clothes and hands are usually covered in it. We have several wheels where the pots are shaped and a large area in the back where they are left to dry out. The weather is a big part of our life; if it's too humid, nothing dries, and if it's too dry, the clay cracks. We have to keep a close eye on everything. It’s a small operation with just a handful of us doing the work. We don't have a showroom, so if you come by, you’ll just see us working in the middle of all the mud and the racks. The office is just a corner with an old filing cabinet and a telephone that rings more than we’d like. We mostly deal with local buyers who have been coming to us for a long time. There is a certain rhythm to the work that we all enjoy. It’s quiet compared to the big mechanical plants nearby. We just like making things that people can use in their homes. We don't use any fancy technology, just our hands and the wheels. It’s a slow process, but we like it that way. We just keep making our pots and plates.
