Our school sits along the busy Sarkhej Road in the Juhapura area of Ahmedabad. It’s a lively part of town, always lots of noise from the traffic outside and people going about their business. Inside the gates, things are a bit different, though you can still hear the honking from the main road. We’ve got a lot of students coming from all over this side of the city. The mornings are usually a bit of a rush, with everyone trying to get through the entrance before the first period starts. The hallways are filled with those green and white uniforms you see everywhere in Juhapura. Teachers here are mostly locals or people who commute from other parts of Ahmedabad. We spend our days going from one classroom to the next, carrying registers and boxes of chalk. The building has seen many batches of students pass through over the years. It’s got that lived-in feel, with some scuffs on the walls and desks that have been sat in by hundreds of kids. During the breaks, the courtyard gets packed with students eating their tiffins and talking loudly. It’s not a quiet place by any means. We focus on the daily routine of lessons and exams. There’s no big corporate vibe here, just a bunch of people trying to make sure the kids get their schooling done in a crowded city environment. It’s just F D High School, a familiar landmark on the road.
