We are based down in Mathurapur II, right near the Raidighi area. It’s situated right on the edge of the Sundarbans. Living and working here is very different from other places. You constantly have to deal with the water, the salt in the soil, and the tides that come and go. We started Sundarban Nababharath Farmers Producer Company Limited to see if we could actually do a bit better by working together. Farming in these parts is always a big gamble. One big storm or a flood and you could lose everything you’ve worked for. We spend a lot of our time talking about how to protect our crops and our land. Our office is just a simple, plain place in Nandakumar village. People come in from all over the Raidighi block just to talk and share news. We don't have any fancy computers or air conditioning to keep us cool. Just some ceiling fans and a lot of paper notebooks. We try to find ways to get our produce out to the bigger markets without losing all our profit to the middlemen who wait on the roads. It’s a constant struggle. We usually meet up after the day's hard work is finished. Often, we’re very tired and covered in mud from the fields, but we still have to sit and talk about the company business. We named it Nababharath because we wanted a better future for our kids.
