In the South 24 Parganas, specifically in Uttaramratalaharanandapur, you will find our small operation. It’s based at Subrata Mandal’s place in the Bishnupur area. We are the Magrahat-II Block Krishikranti farmers producer company. Most of us here have been farming since we were young, so it felt natural to start something that brings us all together. The office is just a simple building where we gather to talk about the season. Being near the coast means we have to deal with different kinds of soil and weather issues than people further inland. We spend a lot of time discussing water levels and what crops will do best this year. It’s not fancy work, and we often have dirt under our fingernails while we are doing the paperwork. We don’t have a marketing team or anyone to make us look polished. We are just local people trying to make a living from the land. Sometimes the road to get here is a bit bumpy, but people know the way. We try to help out the smaller farmers in our block whenever they run into trouble with their harvest. It’s a community effort more than anything else. We just keep our heads down and do the work that needs to be done every day, rain or shine. There is always plenty to do and not enough hours in the day.
