Our spot is right in the middle of Mayapuri Industrial Area Phase II, specifically at B-72. If you know Mayapuri, you know it’s always crowded and there’s always something being moved around. The workshop is usually a bit of a mess with metal shavings and bits of steel lying near the machines. We try to sweep up at the end of the day, but by the next morning, it’s all back again. It’s a loud place. Between the lathes and the people shouting to be heard over them, there isn’t much peace and quiet until lunch. We usually sit on whatever crates are empty to eat our dabbas. The tea guy comes around twice a day, and that’s usually the highlight. We’ve been handling engineering work here for years, mostly just making sure parts fit together like they’re supposed to. The machines are old but we know their quirks, like which one needs a little tap to get started. It gets really hot in the summer under the tin roof, but we’ve got a couple of big pedestal fans that move the hot air around at least. Most of our tools have been with us since the beginning. They’re worn down but they feel right in the hand. It’s just honest work in a busy part of town where nobody really slows down. Merit Engineers is just a group of us keeping things moving.
