Goel Kirana Store

Rz-5 J-Block Dharm Pura Najafgarh is where we have been running Goel Kirana Store for years. It is mostly about the basic groceries that people in Najafgarh need for their daily meals. We have large sacks of different types of rice and lentils sitting near the entrance. Sometimes the smell of the raw spices is quite strong, especially when we open a new bag of chilies or turmeric. The shop floor is just plain cement and it gets a bit cool in the winter months. We use an old digital scale that sometimes flickers, but it still weighs everything correctly. People from J-Block come in mostly in the evenings after they get off the bus. We keep a lot of loose items too, like sugar and flour, because that’s what folks prefer over the packed stuff. It’s a bit of a mess sometimes with all the cardboard boxes piled up in the corner waiting to be recycled. We don't have any fancy air conditioning, just a big ceiling fan that wobbles a little when it's on high speed. Dealing with the wholesalers takes up a lot of our mornings. We have to check every bag for holes or moisture. It is a basic way to earn a living, just keeping the pantry items ready for the neighbors. We stay open seven days a week because people always forget something for their dinner. The J-Block area is mostly residential so we get to know the faces of the people who live nearby.
