If you head over to Mogilicherla in Kuravi, you will find Vinod Auto Services at H. No -3-65/1. It’s a typical village workshop. There is usually a car or two parked outside with the hoods up. I’m Vinod, and I’ve been fixing engines for as long as I can remember. My hands are almost always stained with oil, and the shop smells like grease and petrol. That’s just the way an auto service place should be, I think. People from all over Kuravi bring their bikes and cars here when something starts making a strange noise. We don't have the high-tech scanners that the big city garages have, but we have our ears and our experience. You can tell a lot about what’s wrong with a motor just by listening to it idle. The tools are scattered around the workbench, but I know exactly where the 10mm wrench is. It’s a small space, so we have to be careful not to trip over spare tires or oil cans. Sometimes a job takes longer than expected because a bolt is rusted tight, but we don't give up on it. We just take a break, have some water, and try again. It’s hard work, especially when the sun is beating down on the tin roof, but it’s what I do. My neighbors often stop by just to chat while I’m working. It makes the day go by faster and keeps me connected with everyone around here.
