Visakhapatnam Steel Plant

I’ve lived in Ukkunagaram for years now, and working at the Visakhapatnam Steel Plant feels like a natural part of being here. Our office is over in Sector-7, in the 303B block. It’s a massive area, almost like a city of its own within Vizag. Most people think of just the big furnaces and the smoke, but there’s a lot of administrative stuff happening in these sectors too. The roads are wide and lined with trees, which is nice when you’re walking to the canteen for lunch. It gets incredibly hot in Andhra Pradesh, so we try to get most of the heavy movement done before the sun is directly overhead. Inside the office, it's pretty standard—desks, a few old computers, and stacks of files that never seem to get smaller. We deal with a lot of the logistical side of the steel production. Sometimes it feels like we are just a small gear in a giant machine, but every part matters to keep the plant running. You see the same faces every day, from the security guards at the gate to the guys heading home after a long shift. We don’t really do anything fancy here. We just follow the schedule and make sure the paperwork matches what’s happening out on the floor. It’s a steady job, and the community in the township is very close-knit. Most of us have been here since the plant started growing.
