Jayalakshmi Metal Mart

Jayalakshmi Metal Mart is right on the Main Road by Poorna Market. You can’t miss us because of all the stainless steel and brass stacked up outside. It gets really loud around here with the market crowds and the traffic. We’ve been selling metal goods for a long time. My grandfather used to run a stall near here before we got this shop. We have everything from cooking pots to heavy-duty pipes. The shop is narrow and goes back a long way. It’s hard to keep it clean with the dust from the street. We spend a lot of time moving heavy things around. It's a family business, so you'll usually see one of us behind the counter. We don't have a price list on the wall; we just know what things cost. Customers come in looking for specific sizes, and we go digging in the back to find them. It’s a lot of manual work. We don't have air conditioning, so we keep the fans running all day. People from all over the city come to Poorna Market, so we see a lot of different faces. We just try to provide what people need for their kitchens or their building projects. It's a busy, noisy life, but we wouldn't have it any other way. The metal market has been our life for three generations and we hope to keep it going for many more years to come.
