If you know the Sankaranpalayam area in Vellore, you’ll know it’s a bit of a maze, but we are tucked away at No 8 Anna Salai. It’s a preschool, so you can imagine the kind of noise we deal with from morning till afternoon. The building is more like a house that’s been converted, which makes it feel a bit more cramped than a regular school, but the kids seem to like the small corners. We have these bright plastic chairs and tables everywhere, and there’s always a stray crayon or a toy block hiding under a cabinet somewhere. The heat in Vellore can be quite something, so we keep the fans going constantly, and even then, it gets a bit stuffy by mid-day. The staff are mostly local women who know the parents well, so there’s a lot of chatting at the gate when it’s time to go home. We don’t have a massive playground, just a small paved area where we put out the slides. Sometimes the neighborhood dogs bark at the gate, and the kids get all distracted. It’s a bit chaotic, to be honest. We spend a lot of time cleaning up spills or helping the little ones with their bags. It’s a very practical sort of place without any of that corporate polish you find in the big city chains. We just try to make sure everyone is safe and the day goes by without too much crying or fuss.
