We are situated in Vaniyambadi, which is a good distance from the coastal heat of Chennai. The pin code here is 635751. It’s a different pace of life in this part of Tamil Nadu. Our office is a simple place. It doesn't have any big signs or flashy lights. We have a gate that we lock every evening and a few rooms inside for the various administrative tasks. The walls are painted a pale color that has faded over the years. We have some metal cupboards for all the records and they squeak every time you open them. People from the town come by when they have business to settle. We usually have a jug of water for anyone who walks in because it gets dusty on the road outside. The staff is mostly local people who walk or bike to work. It’s a very straightforward setup. We don't spend much on decorations. We just make sure the chairs are comfortable enough for a full day of work. The afternoon sun comes through the side windows and we have to move our desks sometimes to stay in the shade. It’s just how things are done here. It is a quiet, humble place that serves its purpose for the university without making any fuss about it. We close up exactly on time and go home to our families in the evening.
