About Modern Stone Handicraft – Art & Craft in Varanasi
Out in Motijheel, at B-38/47-C in Tulsi Pur, you’ll find our stone handicraft spot. It’s not a quiet place because there is always someone hammering or using a saw on a piece of rock. There is white dust everywhere, on the floors, on the windows, and even on our hair by the end of the shift. Modern Stone Handicraft is more of a workshop than a fancy shop. We have blocks of stone piled up in the courtyard, waiting for someone to start on them. Some pieces are small enough to hold, while others are heavy and need a few of us to move. We don’t really follow a strict corporate schedule; we just work until the piece is finished or the light fades. The Motijheel area has a lot of little shops like ours, so you hear the sounds of neighbors working too. Sometimes customers come by just to see how things are made, and they have to step over the scraps of stone on the floor. It is a bit disorganized, to be honest. We have tools scattered on the workbenches and half-finished statues sitting in the corners. It’s a messy process, but that’s the only way stone gets shaped. We drink a lot of water to keep the dust out of our throats. It’s a long day, but seeing a rough block turn into something else is just what we do.
