Banaras Beads Ltd. is situated at A-1 in the Industrial Estate. In a place like Banaras, you’d expect something more traditional, but the industrial estate is where the heavy lifting happens. Our building is a large, functional space where we handle all the bead manufacturing and sorting. It’s noisy because of the machines, and there’s a constant clinking sound that you eventually stop hearing. We’ve been at this for a long time. The estate itself has seen better days, with some potholes in the roads and old gates, but it’s home for us. We spend our days looking at tiny details and making sure the counts are right. It’s a lot of manual labor, and the staff is mostly local folks who have been with us for years. We don’t have a big marketing department; we just focus on the orders that come in. The office part of the building is small and usually cluttered with samples of different glass and plastic shapes. Sometimes the electricity goes out and everything goes quiet, which is a bit of a relief, but then we have to scramble to get the generators going. It’s a very hands-on kind of business. We don’t use big words to describe what we do. We just make beads and try to get them packed up on time. The routine is the same every day, from the morning tea to the final sweep of the floor.
