Down in Pratap Nagar, you’ll find our shop, Nova Battery. It’s easy to spot because of the stacks of old plastic casings and the heavy wooden shelves we built to hold all the weight. Batteries are not light things to move around, so we spend a lot of our time lifting and hauling them from the trucks to the back room. The air usually smells a bit like acid and lead, which is something you just get used to after working here for a few months. We mostly deal with car batteries and those big units people use for their houses when the power goes out. It’s a messy job, and our clothes often end up with small holes from the chemicals if we aren't careful. The floor is concrete and has plenty of stains from spills over the years. We aren't trying to be anything other than a local battery shop where people can come when their engine won't start in the morning. Sometimes we have to tell people their old battery is completely dead, which is never fun, but that’s just how it goes. Pratap Nagar is a busy area, so there is always someone coming in with a question or a dead unit. We keep the doors open to let the breeze in, though it doesn't do much on the humid days. It’s just steady, heavy work that needs doing, and we've been doing it like this since we first opened the doors.
