Maheshwari Engineering

Maheshwari Engineering is over at Plot No. 522 in the Gidc Ind. Estate. It’s an engineering shop, so there’s always the smell of oil and the sound of lathes turning. We do a lot of custom work, mostly small parts that other people don't want to mess with. It’s slow work and you have to be careful with the measurements. I spend most of my time standing at the machines while the younger guys handle the heavy materials. We’ve got some old equipment that we’ve repaired ourselves more times than I can count. They still cut straight, so we don’t see a reason to replace them. The lighting isn't the best in the back of the shop, so we mostly work near the front where the big door stays open. It lets in a bit of a breeze too, which helps on the hot days. We don't have a big mission or any corporate goals. We just want to make sure the pieces we turn out are what the customer asked for. Sometimes we stay late to fix a machine that broke down during the shift because we can't afford to lose a day of work. It’s just how it goes when you’re running a small engineering place. We grab some tea from the stall down the road and just keep at it until the sun goes down. It's nothing special, just our daily life here. It's just the way it's always been for us at Plot 522.
