Omkar Mobile

You can find Omkar Mobile at Amal Ka Kanta. It’s a spot where the roads meet and there’s always a bit of chaos. The shop isn't very wide. We have glass counters where we keep the mobile handsets. They’re mostly just for show. We do a lot of small repairs. The back of the shop has a tiny bench with a soldering iron and a magnifying glass. It’s a lot of fine work. My eyes get strained by the afternoon. We have a small television in the corner but we rarely watch it. Usually, it’s just the sound of traffic and people arguing outside. The walls are covered in posters of old phone models. Some are peeling at the edges. We have a blue plastic rug on the floor that we try to sweep every evening. It’s a tight space, so if three people come in at once, it feels crowded. We have a few chargers plugged into a power strip. It’s always buzzing. Amal Ka Kanta is a loud place. We have to speak up to be heard over the motorcycles. We’ve been here for a while. We know the guy who sells fruit next door. Sometimes we share a tea. It’s a basic life but it’s what we do. We pack everything into the cupboards at night and pull down the gate. It’s a good feeling when the day is done.
