Vertivel Rice Mill is over at No:45, Keerakarathattu in Thisaiyamillai. It’s a place that’s always full of the sound of humming machinery. We’ve been working out of this spot for a long time now. The street, Keerakarathattu, isn’t very wide, so when the big trucks come in to load up, it gets a bit tight for everyone else. We spend a lot of our time hauling heavy bags and making sure the milling process is going smoothly. It’s physically hard work, and your back definitely feels it by the time evening rolls around. The air inside the mill is always a bit thick with the smell of dry grain, which you get used to after the first few days. We aren't a big corporation with lots of rules, just a group of people who know how to run a mill. Most of our day is spent watching the machines and making sure nothing gets stuck. Thisaiyamillai is a good place to be, and we feel like we’ve become a part of the landscape here at number 45. We don’t really have a fancy front office or anything, just a desk where we keep the books and a few chairs for when someone stops by to talk. It’s a straightforward business, and we like keeping it that way. We just keep our heads down and do the work that needs doing. By the time we lock up, everyone is ready for a rest.
