Thiramalai Modern Rice Mill

Our mill is located at 13/2 on 3rd Street in Ariyamangalam. It is not a very large place, but we keep very busy with the machinery running most of the day. The sound of the hulling machines is constant, and you have to raise your voice quite a bit to be heard when you are standing near them. We get loads of paddy brought in by the farmers and traders, and then it is all about the processing. There is always a fine layer of dust on everything, no matter how much we sweep the floors at the end of the shift. Working at Thiramalai Modern Rice Mill means being around grain and husks all the time. We check the quality of the rice as it comes out of the machines to make sure it is cleaned properly. My hands are usually dry and rough from handling the grain and the husks. We have been in Ariyamangalam for a long time, and the neighbors are pretty much used to the noise by now. The shed where we store the finished bags is right next to the processing area. It stays pretty warm inside because of the heat from the motors. We don't really have a fancy front office for visitors. Most people just walk right into the mill area to talk to us about their orders. We keep a record of everything in a simple notebook. It is honest work, and it keeps us on our feet all day long. Sometimes the machines break down and we have to spend a few hours fixing them ourselves. That is just part of running a small mill like this.
