Sri Subam Rice Mandi

You can find us at 113, Melapudhur Main Road. It is a busy street with lots of people moving about, and we have been operating this rice mandi here for quite a few years. The smell of raw grain is something you just get used to after a while of working here. We have bags of different types of rice stacked up almost to the ceiling in the back. It is a lot of heavy lifting, dragging those heavy sacks across the floor to the scale. Sometimes the jute bags tear a little and we have to spend time sweeping up the spilled grains from the concrete. We open the shutters early in the morning when the air is still a bit cool. Most of our customers are locals from around Melapudhur who come in for their monthly supply of rice for their families. We don't have a big staff, just a few of us handling the weighing and the accounts. The ledger sits on an old wooden desk that has been here since we first started this place. It gets quite dusty, and the ceiling fans don't do much when it really gets hot outside in the summer. We talk to the truck drivers who bring the loads from the mills and try to get everything stacked properly before the next lot arrives. There isn't much to the place, just the rice and the people who need it. It is a simple routine that repeats every day. We know most of the people who walk through the door by name. That is just how it works in a place like this.
