Our shop, V.L. Sarees, is tucked away in the Surat Textile Market at N-3080. If you have ever been to Ring Road, you know it is a bit of a maze in there. We have been sitting in this same spot for quite some time now. Most of our day is spent unfolding and folding fabrics back up. It’s a lot of manual work but it keeps us busy. The market is always buzzing with noise and there is always someone dragging a cart full of bundles past the door. We aren't a big corporation or anything like that. It is just a few of us here making sure the sarees are stacked properly and the customers get what they asked for. Sometimes the lights flicker a bit or it gets too hot in the summer, but that’s just how it is in these old market buildings. We focus on the everyday stuff. People come in looking for specific patterns or colors and we do our best to find them in the piles. It can get messy when we are busy, but we clear it up eventually. We don't really do much advertising. Most people find us just by walking through the Ring Road area or because they’ve been coming here for years. It’s a plain shop with no big decorations. We just have our stock and a place to sit. It’s honest work and we like being part of the textile community here in Surat. We stay until the market closes every evening.
