We run Thankar India E-commerce out of Unit 21 in the Shri Kuberji Silk Market in Umarwada. If you’ve ever been to Surat, you know how intense the textile markets can be. It’s a world of its own. Shri Kuberji is always packed with people, and the hallways are narrow, usually filled with big plastic-wrapped bundles of fabric. Our space is quite small, mostly taken up by computers and stacks of boxes ready to be shipped out. Since we handle e-commerce, it’s a lot of printing labels and checking that the right item is going to the right person. It’s not a quiet office environment; it’s noisy and fast-paced. There’s a constant stream of delivery guys coming in and out to pick up packages. The market itself is huge, and it’s easy to get turned around if you don't know the layout. We usually have a radio playing in the background to drown out some of the market noise. The air is always a bit thick with the smell of new cloth and exhaust from the scooters outside. We don't have any fancy mission statements or anything like that. We just wake up, come to the market, and try to get as many orders out as possible before the courier cutoff. It’s a lot of hours and a lot of standing around on hard floors, but it’s what we do. Sometimes we stay late just to clear the backlog from a sale.
