Our shop is tucked away in one of the long corridors. We spend our days surrounded by a lot of color. There are sarees everywhere—stacked on shelves, draped over counters, and some still in their plastic packaging. Surat is famous for this kind of work, so there is always a lot of competition and noise in the market. We don't have a big corporate team; it’s just a few of us who know about fabric and patterns. Sometimes the lift in the market takes forever to arrive, so we just end up taking the stairs. It’s a lot of physical work, moving the heavy bundles around and showing different pieces to people who stop by. We don't use any fancy sales talk. We just show what we have and let the fabric speak for itself. The lighting in the shop is quite bright so people can see the real colors of the threads. Most days we are there until late in the evening, especially during the wedding season when everyone is looking for something specific. It’s a busy life in the textile market, but we’ve been doing it for long enough that it feels like home for all of us.
