Satya Laxmi Sarees

Our place is in the Kohinoor Textile Market, right on the Ring Road. It’s shop C-3525. If you’re coming here, just take Lift Number 16, it’s the easiest way to reach us without getting exhausted. The market is huge and it’s easy to get turned around with all the different corridors and shop numbers. We deal with sarees all day long. Unfolding them, showing the patterns, and then trying to fold them back exactly how they were, which is harder than it looks. The floor is usually covered in plastic packaging and bits of tape. Surat is hot, and the market can feel like an oven sometimes, but we have the fans going. It’s a lot of lifting heavy bundles and loading them onto carts to be sent out. I’ve been working here for a while and my back definitely feels it by Friday. We don’t really do anything besides trade sarees and talk to the other shopkeepers during tea breaks. Most of the guys in the building are friendly enough. We all have the same problems with the traffic on Ring Road and the parking situation. It’s just a regular wholesale spot. We don’t have a fancy showroom, just racks and racks of stock and a small space to sit and do the billing. It’s honest work and it keeps the lights on. We just keep moving the boxes.
