I work out of a small office on the third floor of the Swami Narayan Complex. It’s unit F/4. This part of Surat is pretty central, which makes it easy for people to find the building, though the parking outside can be a real mess most days. I’ve been in this same spot for several years now. The office itself is nothing special. I have a big wooden desk that has seen better days and a few chairs for when people visit. There is no big staff here, just me handling the daily tasks and keeping the records straight. I spend a lot of time writing things down in my ledger. I’ve never been much for fancy computer systems. The light in the afternoon comes through the window and hits my desk, which is nice in the winter but a bit hot in the summer months. I usually keep a bottle of water and some snacks in the drawer. The other offices on the third floor are mostly occupied by people I’ve known for a long time. We sometimes stand in the hallway and talk about the weather or how the local business is going. It’s a simple way of working. I don’t try to act like a big company. I just provide my services to whoever needs them and try to be fair about it. Every evening, I lock up the office, walk down the three flights of stairs, and head home to my family.
