Hiralal Sons Jariwala

If you come to Surat and look for Navapura, you’ll find us in the old part of town. Hiralal Sons Jariwala is located at 3/757, Bhat Ni Pith. You have to turn into Mani Vaids Khancha to see our door. This area is famous for jari work, and our family has been doing this for generations. We work with metallic threads and traditional embroidery materials. The workspace is part of our old family house. It’s not a modern factory with robots. We do a lot of the sorting and winding by hand. The rooms are filled with the smell of old wood and the shine of the threads. It gets very busy during the wedding season because everyone wants the traditional jari for their clothes. We don’t have a fancy website or a sales team. People know us by our name and where we are located. Often, a customer will sit on the floor with us to look at the different grades of thread. It’s a slow process sometimes, but you can’t rush this kind of work. My sons handle the deliveries and talk to the bigger merchants. I spend most of my time checking the finish. The street outside is narrow, so it’s always a struggle with the bikes and carts. But that’s just how life is in the heart of Surat. We keep doing what our fathers taught us.
