Avdhesh Colour Wala is based out of Jyoti Nagar on Gota Road. I’ve been doing this kind of work since I was a teenager. Gota Road is always dusty with the traffic, so we spend a lot of time just cleaning the walls before we can even open a can of paint. My shop isn't much to look at, just some shelves with half-used tins and a bunch of brushes soaking in jars. I prefer it that way because I’m usually out at a site anyway. In Jyoti Nagar, the houses are close together, so you have to be careful not to get paint on the neighbor's gate. I usually bring my own lunch in a steel box and eat under a tree while the walls dry. I don’t use any fancy computers to match colors; I just do it by eye mostly. It’s a habit I picked up over the years. Some people want bright reds and blues, while others just want a clean white. I don’t mind either way as long as the surface is smooth. Sometimes my back hurts from bending over to paint the skirting boards, but that’s just how it is. We use old rags to wipe up spills and we try to leave the place better than we found it. It’s just me and a few local boys who know how to handle a roller. We show up on time and leave when the light goes. It's hard work but it's okay.
