We are based at Apple House in Maliniwadi, right off Gali No-2 near the Ringroad. If you’ve ever been to Surat, you know how packed this area gets around the Kohinur Market. Our building is always full of stacks of sarees and fabrics waiting to be sent out. It’s a very busy place and the noise from the street never really stops during the day. We spend hours checking the embroidery and the prints on the new arrivals. The laborers are always moving bundles up and down the stairs. It is a lot of manual work and the office is usually cluttered with samples and order sheets. We have a small team but everyone knows their job. Some of us handle the packing while others talk to the buyers who come in from other cities. The heat in the summer makes the narrow lanes quite tough to navigate but the business keeps going. We drink a lot of tea to stay focused while we sort through the different colors and designs. It is not a glamorous job but it is good to see the finished pieces ready for the market. We are right in the heart of the textile hub so there is always a lot of energy. Most days are long and we usually finish after the sun goes down and the market traffic starts to thin out. It is just the way the textile business works in this part of town.
