Being on the third floor of the NCUI Building means you get to see a lot of people coming and going. We are right there in the Siri Institutional Area, looking out toward the August Kranti Marg. It is a busy part of town, especially with the Asiad Village right across the way. The office is not anything like those modern glass buildings you see in the movies. We have heavy desks, lots of metal filing cabinets, and the hallways always seem to have someone walking fast with a stack of papers. Most of our morning is spent just getting through the mail and answering the phones that never seem to stop ringing. It gets a bit loud when the tea trolley comes around, which is usually the highlight of the afternoon for most of the staff. We have got a lot of windows, but the curtains are usually pulled tight to keep the Delhi sun out during the summer. It is a bit of a maze in here if you do not know your way around the different sections. You will see people waiting in the plastic chairs near the entrance, just passing time until someone can see them. We do not really do much in terms of decoration, maybe a few old calendars on the walls. It feels like a place where real work happens, even if it is just moving documents from one side of the desk to the other all day. The lift is slow, so we take the stairs.
