Shahar Merchandising & Exports is based in the basement of J-3/B in Lajpat Nagar-III. Working in a basement means we don't get much natural light, so we have a lot of tube lights on all day long. It stays a bit cooler down here during the hot Delhi summers, which is one good thing. The space is usually packed with cartons and bundles of fabric because we are always preparing something for export. Lajpat Nagar is a very busy market area, so there is constant noise from the shoppers and the honking cars outside. We spend our time checking the quality of the goods and making sure the packaging is strong enough for long journeys. It is a lot of physical work, lifting boxes and taping them up, and our clothes usually end up pretty dusty by the end of the shift. We don't have any fancy titles here; everyone just pitches in with whatever needs to be done, whether it is counting inventory or talking to the transport guys. Sometimes the rain causes a bit of a worry with the basement entrance, but we have managed to keep everything dry so far. We have been in this location for years and we like the convenience of being near the main market. It is just a straightforward business where we work hard and try to get everything shipped out on time.
