If you walk down No. 93 in Hauz Rani, you’ll find us sitting among piles of fabric and thread. Virasat Fashion Apparel isn’t a huge showroom with bright lights and mannequins in the window. It’s more of a workshop where the sound of the machines is always going in the background. We spend a lot of time looking at patterns and making sure the stitching is okay. South Delhi can be a bit fast, but our little corner feels a bit slower, even when we have a lot of work to finish by the weekend. The shelves are mostly full of rolls of cloth that we’ve picked up over the months. Some days it’s quiet and we just organize the inventory, and other days it feels like everyone is coming in at once asking for things. We don’t really do big advertisements or anything. Most people just know we are here because they live nearby or heard about us from a neighbor. The floor usually has some loose threads on it by the time we close up for the evening. It’s just the way it is when you’re working with clothes all day long. We have a small table in the back where we drink our tea and talk about what needs to be done next. It’s a plain place, but it works for what we need to do. There is always something to cut or sew, and that is just fine with us.
