Guggenheim Museum Asian Art Antiquities Department

Dealing with the Asian Art Antiquities Department means we work out of two very different spots. One part of the team is based at 81 Orchard Street in Apartment 6, over in New York, right in the 10002 zip code area. At the same time, we have another setup at S 328 in GK 2, New Delhi, 110048. It means we are often juggling things between two different continents and dealing with time zones that don't always line up. In the New York apartment, it can get a bit crowded with all the research books and files we have on Asian art. It’s more of a quiet study space than a gallery where the public comes in. Over in the New Delhi office in GK 2, we handle a lot of the local work and coordinating with people on the ground in India. We spend a huge amount of time looking at old objects and trying to track down their history for the museum. It isn't always the most exciting work; there is a lot of slow research and very careful packing when things need to be moved. Sometimes we have to wait quite a while for a response from the other office because of the time difference between India and the US. We are just a small group of people who are really interested in these old antiquities. We don't have a big public entrance for this department, so it’s mostly just us working on our own projects. It takes a lot of patience.
