Our shop is on the 3rd floor at No. 1067/10 in Govind Puri, right near Kalkaji. If you know Govind Puri, you know the buildings are all built very close together and the lanes are quite narrow. Climbing up to the 3rd floor every day is our version of a morning workout. We don’t have an elevator, so we have to carry everything up and down the stairs. It’s a bit of a struggle when we have heavy rolls of fabric or big boxes of finished clothes. The space we have is okay, but it gets crowded very quickly once we start working. We have a few windows that look out over the rooftops of the neighborhood. You can see people drying clothes and kids playing on the nearby terraces. It’s a very lively, noisy part of Delhi. We spend our time here cutting patterns and doing the finishing work on the garments. It’s not a big corporate setup. It’s just a few of us in a room with some machines and a lot of work to do. Sometimes we stay late when there’s a lot to get through, and you can hear the sounds of the neighborhood settling down for the night. We like it here because it’s close to the markets in Kalkaji, which makes it easier to get whatever supplies we run out of. It’s a simple, honest way to make a living in a busy city.
