Project Sukanya

Project Sukanya is based out in Khasmallick village, which is under the Dakshin Gobindapur post office. If you know the Baruipur area in Kolkata, you know it’s a bit of a trek from the main city center. We are set up in a simple building that fits in with the rest of the village houses. It’s not an easy place to find if you aren't from around here, as the roads can be a bit dusty and the signs aren't always clear. We spend our days working on local initiatives and helping the community with various small projects. There isn't any air conditioning, so we keep the windows open to catch the breeze, even though it brings in some flies sometimes. We have a few wooden tables and some plastic chairs for when people come by to talk. It's a very quiet life out here compared to the noise of central Kolkata. We don't have a big staff, just a couple of people who live nearby and care about what we are doing. The internet can be a bit spotty when it rains, so we do a lot of our work with pen and paper first. It’s a practical way of doing things and it works for us. We usually close up shop before it gets too dark because the streetlights aren't very reliable on the path back to the main road. The mosquitoes can be a real bother in the evenings too, so we try to head home early.
