If you head down Hotgi Road in Solapur, you’ll find us at Sahara Housing Society No 1. It’s a bit of an unusual spot for a cement company office like Gujrat Ambuja Cement Ltd, being in a residential society and all. But it works for us. It’s quieter than being right in the middle of the city center, and it’s easier for some of the local guys to reach us. The office is basically a converted space that we’ve made our own over the years. We’ve got maps of the district pinned to the walls and stacks of ledgers on the shelves. It’s not a place for meetings with fancy investors; it’s where we talk to the drivers and the local builders. The atmosphere is pretty relaxed. We usually have the windows open to let in a breeze, though that also lets in the dust from the road. Solapur can get incredibly hot, so we try to get most of the heavy work done early in the morning. By afternoon, things slow down a bit. We all know each other well here, and there’s usually some light joking around while we process the daily paperwork. It’s a honest way to earn a living. We don't try to be anything we aren't. We just make sure the cement gets to where it’s supposed to be and that the records are kept straight. It’s our little home base on Hotgi Road.
