It’s an industrial spot, so the whole neighborhood is filled with the sounds of production and the smell of various chemicals and materials. In our shop, it is mostly the scent of ink and the heat from the lamination machines that hits you first. The machines take up most of the floor space, leaving only narrow paths for us to walk between the stacks of paper and finished products. It gets pretty loud when everything is running at once, so we usually have to shout a bit to be heard over the hum. We have some heavy-duty lighting hanging from the rafters because you need to see the colors clearly when you are checking a print job. The walls are mostly bare, except for a few calendars and some old samples we kept for reference. We don't have a receptionist or a waiting room; if someone comes by, they just find us at the machines or at the small metal desk where we handle the billing. Sometimes a machine breaks down and we have to spend a few hours getting our hands greasy to fix it, which usually puts us behind schedule. But we just stay a bit later to catch up. It is a noisy, messy kind of job, but it is what we know how to do. Most of us have been here since the plot was first cleared.
