Subway

Our spot is right on Fergusson College Road, just across from Gate No 3. It’s in the Chanakyapuri Building. If you know Deccan Gymkhana, you know how hectic it gets around here. There is always someone shouting or a horn honking outside. At Subway, we spend the day mostly standing behind the glass. We see hundreds of people walking past the window every hour. It’s a lot of bread and a lot of vegetables. We spend a lot of time chopping onions and tomatoes in the morning. Sometimes the delivery truck comes late and we have to scramble to get everything ready before the lunch rush hits. It’s not a glamorous job, but it keeps us busy. The air conditioner hums pretty loud, but you stop noticing it after a while. We have a lot of students coming in because of the college across the street. They are usually in a hurry. We just try to keep the line moving so nobody gets too annoyed. The floor gets tracked with mud when it rains, so someone is always grabbing the mop. We don’t really do anything besides make the food and keep the place running. It’s just a normal shop on a busy road. Nothing more to it than that. We’ve seen the neighborhood change a bit, but the traffic on Vijay Nagar Road stays the same. The soda machine sometimes leaks a little bit, but we just put a towel under it and keep going until the repair guy shows up.
