Our shop is situated on the corner where Raviwar Peth and Sadashiv Peth Road meet. It’s an old and busy part of Pune. We are a general store. We stock a bit of everything that a household might need on a daily basis. You’ll see bags of grains and jars of spices. Soaps and all sorts of small items are crammed onto the shelves. It’s a tight squeeze in here. This is especially true when more than two people are trying to shop at once. Shiv Kiran General Stores has been a part of this neighborhood for a long time. We know what our neighbors like. We know what they need for their kitchens. The street outside is always noisy with scooters and people shouting. That is just part of life in the Peth areas. We start our day by setting out the fresh stock. Then we sweep the front step. It’s a simple life. We don't have fancy barcodes or automated systems. Mostly we know the prices by heart. We write things down in a diary. Sometimes we run out of something popular. Then we have to wait for the distributor to wind through the narrow streets to reach us. Dealing with the crowd on Sadashiv Peth Road can be tiring. But we enjoy the talk and the daily interaction. We are just a regular family-run store trying to provide the basics to the local folks.
