Deccan Gymkhana is where we spend most of our lives. If you walk past the Shani Mandir near Sant Tukaram Nagar, you might catch the smell of what we are cooking that day. We aren't a big corporate kitchen with shiny robots. It’s just us, some big stainless steel pots, and a lot of fresh vegetables. Our mornings start really early, usually before the sun is even up, because the prep work takes forever. Peeling onions and chopping ginger isn't fun, but it has to be done. We’ve been at this spot for a long time now. The kitchen gets really hot in the afternoons, so we take breaks in the small shade outside. We mostly handle local events and family gatherings. People know us by name around here. We don't have a fancy website or a marketing team telling us what to say. We just know how to make a decent meal that fills people up. Sometimes the delivery van acts up, or a supplier is late with the rice, and we have to scramble. That’s just how it goes in this business. We try to keep things simple and honest. If the food is good, people come back, and that’s basically how we’ve stayed open all these years. It’s hard work on your feet all day, but seeing empty plates at the end of a party makes it okay. Most days we are just tired but it’s a good kind of tired.
